With the project, students were able to learn how to ensure a healthy potato crop. Kent Sather of the Colorado State University Extension Service and manager of the Potato Certification Service inspected the growing crop, finding the potatoes virus-free. A federal inspection is required during the 100-day upbringing period to designate a crop as certified seed potatoes. Also, entering the greenhouse required everyone to step in disinfectant to eliminate the chance of transferring germs to the crop as it grew.

Frigid temperatures didn’t stop Alamosa FFA Chapter members from harvesting their potato mini-tuber crop on a snowy Tuesday morning in February.
